If you choose to study nautical science, you will be prepared to become a deck officer. Nautical science is basically a 3-year course resulting in a diploma or a graduate degree, post which you can associate yourself with a ship as a cadet officer at trainee level. After completing a considerable time at the sea and obtaining necessary certificates of competency exams, you may become eligible to become a navigating officer on a merchant ship.
There are many colleges that offer diploma in nautical science.This 3-year course is perfect for those students who have completed 10+2 and are looking for a shining and bright career as a Navigation Officer. After successful completion of the course, you will be required to go through on-the-job training for 12 months and sea service for becoming a Navigation Officer. You will also be awarded with the Second Mates Foreign Going Certificate of Competency by The Ministry of Shipping after you complete the course.
There is a prescribed age limit for enrolling in this course i.e. between 17 and25 years. If you have completed 10+2 in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and have scored 45% aggregate marks, you are eligible for this course.
GP Rating Course, which implies General Purpose Rating Course. These students obtain training in both Engine Room and Deck tasks. If you have completed the GP Rating Course you may either be employed in Engine Department or Deck Department as per the needs of the company.
