Diploma in Nautical Science is a course that mainly focuses on fundamentals in mathematics, information technology, physics and basic nautical knowledge in the first year of the course. The exams are taken by IMU (Indian Maritime University), Chennai. All the candidates successfully passing the exam would be awarded with the Diploma in Nautical Science or DNS course diploma.

Diploma in marine engineering is a job oriented course that will help one build a career in Merchant Navy. It is a 1 year long Diploma course. The course makes the candidates ready to take on the role of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. It also covers basics of Marine Technical Knowledge, Safety and Fire Prevention, Communication Skills etc.

Diploma in marine engineering is authorized by the ministry of shipping Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential. The eligibility to avail this course is to have a Pass diploma in Mechanical/Marine/Naval Architecture/Electrical/Electrical and Electronics Engineering with at least 50% marks in the final year and with at least 50% marks in English language at 10th, or12th std. or diploma exam.

Training Cadet

Just after getting the Diploma in Nautical Science from one of the authorized diploma in nautical science colleges, the cadet gets absorbed as a Training Cadet on the ship. A Training Cadet with DNS course diploma is paid somewhere around 600 USD/ month.

Career Growth

Second Officer

After gaining 18 months of sea experience the training cadet becomes eligible to appear for second mate exam. On clearing the exam, the training cadet is promoted as a Second Officer. The Second Officer is paid somewhere around 3000 USD/ month.

Chief Officer

As a Second Officer when you gain a considerable sea experience, you become eligible for the chief mate exam. On clearing the exam, the Second Officer gets promoted as a Chief Officer. A Chief Officer is paid somewhere around 5000 USD/ month.

Captain

With few years of experience, the chief officer gets promoted as a Captain of the ship. A Captain of the ship is paid nearly 9000 USD / month.
